Tlingit Indians in Douglas, Alaska Here is a scarce stereoview from the early 1890's that is titled: Douglas Island [Alaska]. Group of Squaws. Trading. From the famous stereo photographer and publisher T. W. Ingersoll, St. Paul, Minn. Nice early 3-D image of presumably Tlingit women selling their baskets, souvenirs, and berries, to the steamship tourists. Ingersoll "...lost an eye at an early age in an accident involving an arrow made from a corset stay. This made his future work in stereophotography all the more remarkable." (cited from Truman Ingersoll, St. Paul photographer Pictured the world. Johnston, Patricia Condon. Minnesota History 47:4, 1980. page 127). Ingersoll was one of the most important 19th. century stereo photographers and publishers, manufacturing millions of views, and he never saw even one in 3- D! Some of the most commonly seen Alaska views, Juneau included, are his color lithographed series which were premiums in cereal boxes. They are cheap reprints of his original black & white stereographs. This example is an original albumen print. $48 plus $3 postage, packing, & insurance (international orders extra).
