Rose Inlet Dall Island Very rare real photo postcard of Rose Inlet cannery buildings on Dall Island, Alaska. [shelf locator: Ephemera Notebook: Ketchikan Region] SOLD |
Important Early Alaska Needlework 1932 Alaska Crewel Embroidery wall hanging with floral & animal work. Measures about 35” by 18”. Linen fabric, backed by a more finely woven linen panel. Embroidered (signed) “Marie Henn 1932 Alaska” on the back. Marie Henn lived in Ketchikan and died in 1995 at the age of 99 years. There is also a written signature on the inside hem of the front panel that appears to read “Marie Anders.” There are two openings in the edge seams at the top corners where a person could insert a wooden dowel to hang the fabric as a wall hanging. There is a small rip in the folded edge of the linen and another small rip located about halfway between the edge and the upper lavender flower. One yarn strand of this flower is broken, but it will easily press down into place if you frame the picture behind glass. There is an even smaller edge rip below the previously mentioned edge rip, but this one is not apparent in the photo. The yarn fringe at the bottom of the wall hanging seems to be complete, but it is starting to pull away from the edge of the linen in a few places, but this could be easily whipped back into place with a little hand sewing. Near a bottom corner on the back fabric panel there is a little fraying located to the right of the embroidered “Alaska.” Overall good condition. The linen could use a little steaming to smooth out some wrinkles. This needlework should be framed by the purchaser. Early Alaska needlework of this quality is exceedingly rare. $950 plus $10.00 postage SOLD (the buyer told me that, someday, she will donate it to the Alaska State Museum) |
