(Alaska) Autograph letter signed, from William Stevens, 3 pages, Aug 1, 1867, 5"X8", Kansas City, to former Union Brigadier General Thomas Ewing Jr (1829-96), excellent content trying to become Governor of the newly acquired territory of Alaska. Reads in part, "...I have written you two or three letters directed to Washington City...upon the subject of the Governorship of Alaska or Russian America but have had no reply...I learned...that you were in New York...Upon our requisition of Russian America I resolved to try to get the Governorship of the Territory, and I trust you will give me the benefit of your influence with the President [Andrew Johnson]. I have many reasons for desiring to go on the Pacific Coast some of which may result in our mutual benefit...I feel quite sure of the friendship and influence of Gov. R[obert] J. Walker..." Thomas Ewing Jr (1829-96), was a Union Brigadier General, who recruited the 11th Regiment Kansas Volunteer Cavalry, and who engaged primarily in Missouri. In an effort to suppress the bushwackers who roamed the area, Ewing issued the notorious General Order No. 11, which decreed expulsion of the inhabitants, loyal or disloyal, from the Missouri counties of Jackson, Cass, Vernon and Bates. (Alaska) Autograph letter signed, from William Stevens, 3 pages, July 19, 1867, 5"X8", Kansas City, to former Union Brigadier General Thomas Ewing Jr (1829-96), excellent content trying to become Governor of the newly acquired territory of Alaska. Reads in part, "...From the telegraph reports I see Gen. [Lovell] Rous[s]eau has been detailed as United States Commissioner to take formal possession of our recent Russian purchase and that Ex-Senator [James] McDougal[l] is a candidate for the Governorship of the new territory. You may or may not have received a Communication...from me asking you to present my claims to the President [Andrew Johnson] for the Governorship of that Country...I have no means of knowing what influence Mr. McDougal[l] has with the President...but I have been assured by Col. Simms of this State that Gen. [Thomas] Ewings & Gov. R[obert] J. Walker united can procure anything from the President...If you and the Governor will see President Johnson and get from him a promise to give me the position when the territory space have been organized...I shall feel that I am indebted...and will reciprocate the favor at no distant day in some way. I have special reasons for desiring to go onto the Pacific Coast..."
