 Sealskin Parka

Stunning and magnificent Alaska woman's sealskin parka. It carries the famous Jonas Brothers label. This vintage jacket is from the 1950's. The wide metal zipper dates it to the 1950's, as this style zipper was not used in the 1960's. Also, the Jonas Bros label says Alaska & Seattle, their early label, whereas later labels say "Anchorage - Fairbanks - Nome." Therefore it is perfectly legal under the MMPA. The law states:

"§216.14 Marine mammals taken before the MMPA.
(a) Section 102(e) of the MMPA provides, in effect, that the MMPA shall not apply to any marine mammal taken prior to December 21, 1972, or to any marine mammal product, consisting of or composed in whole or in part of, any marine mammal taken before that date."

Jonas Bros closed all of their stores in Alaska before 1972 (not to be confused with the taxidermists, "Jonas Bros of Denver" who also had stores in Alaska but didn't make or sell these parkas).

It features a fossilized ivory zipper pull. It's in nice condition. There is a small tear at the corner of one of the pockets that can easily be sewn, but I''l leave that up to the new owner so that they can do it properly. I'd guess that it's a women's large, but that is just a guess. Possibly an extra-large. A woman who is about 6 feet tall and broad-shouldered tried it on and it fit her. So maybe a large, around a size 16, I think. If you live in Anchorage or Fairbanks I can probably get the parka brought up there for you to try on. I can also send additional photos of a woman wearing the parka, and I have her measurements for comparison.

In researching the Jonas Brothers I found that they were selling this jacket for $215 in the 1950's, which in today's money, using the inflation calculator, is over $1700. These classic Alaska parkas from the 1950's are no longer being made today. To purchase a similar quality Native made sealskin parka today from an Alaska Native will cost far in excess of what I'm selling this vintage parka for!

The last photo shows the Jonas Bros' Anchorage store and museum.

Elegant Eskimo
 Sealskin Jacket

Vintage sealskin Jacket. It has a zip up front. The metal zipper is large and wide, which dates it to pre-marine mammal protection act.
It has pockets. The lining is excellent. Probably 1950's. Certainly before the 1960's as they never would have used such a wide metal zipper in the '60's. The label is from the Anchorage Fur Factory. Note the pre-zip code label.

Issues: on the neck is a thumbnail size piece of the fur missing (can be patched), and a repair area on left back sleeve not so noticeable.

Size: feels like S - M ( Please refer to measurements)

Measurements were taken with the garment laying flat:
Shoulder : 16"
Sleeve : 24 3/4"
Armpit to Armpit: 21 3/4"
Waist: 22"
Hips : 22 1/2"
Length: 29"

We may be able to bring this jacket to Anchorage for trying on if you are very seriously interested in it. A similar jacket purchased today from an Alaska Native will cost thousands of dollars.

I can mail this. Shipping would be $18 within Alaska

$995 plus $18.00 postage & packing & insurance (no international orders) for this jacket.
