E.J. Ward and daughter Martha

Photo measures 6.5 x 8.5 inches.
Dated 10-14-1922.

Photos related to Wainwright Alaska are rare!

"E.J. Ward, teacher in the United States public school at Wainwright, Alaska --
the northernmost point in America -- has just returned to Washington, D.C.,
with his pretty young daughter, Martha. They are shown both dressed in the parka,
the customary dress in the frozen north. The teacher and daughter stopped
off at the camp of Roald Amundsen, the explorer, in Alaska, leaving there on August 23.
The "Call of the North" is in Ward and he is eager to return again
to the place in the Far North where he was 100 miles from any other white man
and where he acted as judge, postmaster, doctor and undertaker for the natives."
