The
Mountain Bluebird Jacket
|
Fabulous Beaded Moosehide Chief's Jacket Nicely documented; purchased in 1936 by Miss Pearl Stockton of Chicopee, Mass. She paid $22.50 for it at Eagle, Alaska Territory. Her notes for the trip, written on the sternwheeler Yukon, state “Eagle- last town before crossing boundary line. Moosehide jacket” and “Moosehide jacket made by the Indians in Eagles(sic), Alaska, on the Yukon River near the International Boundary Line.” She crossed the Arctic Circle, near Fort Yukon on July 26, 1936. Splendid portrayal of Mountain Bluebirds. Some of the first color to be seen in the spring, on the northern Yukon River, would be these stunning Mountain Bluebirds returning to nest. Included is a letter from Kate Duncan about the jacket. Fully beaded, cape-collared, Chief's Jackets are very rare; only a few are known to exist, mostly from historic photographs. The jacket has about 12,000 beads on it! I don’t see any that are loose or missing; it was extremely well made. Someone has removed either a leather fringe or a fur trim, which can be restored. keywords: Gwich'in, Gwichin, Athabaskan, Athabascan, Athapaskan, Athapascan Price is $12,500.00 plus delivery & insurance.
