Elbridge Warren Merrill

Lovely, original, hand tinted photograph by Merrill of Sitka. Merrill was a famous Alaskan artist/photographer, and this is one of the nicest examples of his work. Two Tlingit or Haida canoes. The small one is probably a spruce canoe; the larger of cedar. Blankets hang over the bow and stern, which will be used to cover the canoe to keep the sun from drying it out. According to the N.P.S., "Elbridge Warren Merrill was a Boston engraver and news photographer who had come to Alaska in 1897. He arrived in Sitka that year, is said to have gone on to the Klondike, and returned to Sitka in 1899. After working at odd jobs in Sitka, Merrill opened a curio store and photography studio in 1905. His store was located in downtown Sitka in the Mills Building, and his studio was on Jamestown Bay. At the time it was accessible only by a footpath that wound along the beach and through Indian River Park."  This wonderful photograph is in great condition with the original studio frame, 8"x 10". Hand signed in the lower right, in white paint, by Merrill.
